Boys in the Women's Bathroom

I was in a public bathroom today and a mom had her son in the restroom with her. He seemed really old to be in a women's restroom.

How old do you think is too old for a male child to be in the women's restroom?

While I agree with you that boys that are too old shouldn't be in the women's bathroom...what should moms do if their sons are past that age but not developmentally ready to be alone?

That is a tough question...
I just remember hearing the horror stories of boys that went to the bathroom alone...
and that terrifies me!
Great question...
Now I need to figure out the solution! (I have a while to ponder it though!)
Guess that is why they are installing so many "family" bathrooms now.

My 4 year-old wants to go into the mens bathroom. But I still make him come with me unless we are in a really uncrowded place. But once he is in kindergarten he can go int he mens one. I usually will wait outside and say something to him every minute or so (I have an older son I did this with). At the YMCA, a 5 year-old should not be in a locker room with women who change and get naked in front of everyone! Thank goodness he has an older brother to go with him into the mens locker room. But my 8 year-old would go and change by himself and meet us on the other side. We never had any problems.

I agree with Becca. My son is old enough to go on his own, but when I have to use the rest room, I have to bring him in with me because I don't trust other people in a mall. I try and use family ones then.

This question is a tough one. Horrible things can happen even when the child is older. When I was 15, my family had gone to the fair. Afterwards, we stopped at a gas station to get some gas. It was probably around 11 pm. My step brothers, twins age 11 went into the restroom and were held by gunpoint by a man and one of my brothers was forced to give oral sex to the man. My family was oblivious to what was going on until my brothers came running out screaming (after the man had finished his business). I recall my dad trying to chase after the man who took off in a van.

So, anything can happen at any age and even if more than one go in. But you don't want to really be paranoid either.

That's a toughie! I remember having to do that when my husband was around because my little guy was so naive and I was terribly worried about him. I'm not sure what the right age is though.

I am not sure at what age yet I will let my little guy go into the mens bath room alone...maybe 21! lol I just have heard so many horrors, it will depend on his development. When he can fully grasp and understand what could happen and how to protect himself, and it also depends on the location. Great question, your really getting people to think!
