Reading to Children

I've heard of women reading to children still in the womb. I've heard of women reading to young children and I've heard of women reading to older children for the purpose of keeping the reading bond.

What are your thoughts on reading to children? I did not read to my children while still pregnant, but I did read to them as they developed into toddlers. Once they were reading on their own I seldom read to them anymore.

What do you think? What have you done with your own children?

I don't remember reading to my children in the womb. It's an interesting idea.

I read to my children sometimes. I need to do it a lot more. Most of them can read now. I read to my 4 year-old the most. He's the only one not reading yet. It's really good for kids, though. I should have done it more often than I did!

I didn't do anything while in the womb. I pretty much read to my kids until they got into the middle school years. But, I'm a huge book person.

Hello Audrey, thank you for commenting on my post! I have a degree in education, have worked with kids for all of my life. My husband and I have not been able to have a baby, and have had two losses, one last year and one this past year. Thank you again for your sweet comment.

We didn't read during the pregnancy months, but I did start reading soon after. I continued reading into their elementary grade years. I don't remember when we stopped, but it wasn't beyond 4th grade or so.

I didn't read to them when I was pregnant, but I began reading to them around six months old. This past week I had a parent/teacher conference with both of my kids teachers. Caroline is the only one in Kindergarten who can read the reading chart posted on the board, and Ben's teacher informed me that he's never without a book - even in recess! I didn't know those facts before this week, so yes, I would say that reading to children is a very good thing. It's a learned discipline, but the work pays off.

I started reading to my kids as babies and we kept a nightly story time 'til long after they learned to read. I miss storytime! The great thing is they're still crazy about books.

Amazingly, my oldest son's teachers still read to her class...in 6th grade. Because my middle son is a reluctant reader and lacks "fluency" I've read a lot about reading. Studies show that kids do benefit from being read to through eighth grade. Weird, huh?

I think my husband read to the oldest until he was in 5th grade...they started a couple series of books when he was in first grade...took that long to finish the series.

We read to the two younger children because of their fluency issues. But we have them read a page and we read a page.

my husband was deploying to Afghanistan and we recorded him reading so that we could hear him while he is gone...

I was pregnant with my 2nd child when my first one was in Kindergarden, and her teacher said the best thing you can do to help your child is read to them. So we did everynight. And my 2nd child began reading when he was not quite 4. I didn't do that with my 3rd child, I didn't read to her until she was born and she has always read above her level.
